My job description
One of our company's most important missions is currently developing a palm-sized heat exchanger. Our annual production target is approximately 600,000 units. My department is currently preparing to launch a mass production system. Developing small devices that require mass production is uncharted territory for our company. While we have knowledge and expertise in the production technology of large devices, we don't have any expertise specifically in small-scale mass production. Therefore, we start by researching the structure and function of similar products, and then walk through the production process, observing the movements of the equipment, manufacturing staff, and other "people." Another important part of my job is to hear about the needs of server manufacturers and data center operators who use our equipment. I recently traveled to Taiwan and directly heard the needs of local manufacturers.
Job satisfaction
It's not often that you get the experience of being involved in launching a new piece of equipment from the ground up. I'm grateful that they highly valued my previous work experience. It was only three months after I joined the company that I was allowed to go on a business trip to Taiwan. The idea is that getting in touch with products and meeting customers as early as possible leads to growth. I realized immediately after joining the company that there is an environment that carefully trains employees. Outstanding teamwork is common to all departments. There are no barriers between positions or departments, and currently there are four executives, two of whom sit near my desk. They frequently talk to me on the same level, so it's easy to ask for advice.
Difficulty of the job
Mass production is not simply about producing a large number of products. We must improve quality while also considering costs, and create a system that allows for stable mass production on time. To achieve this, automation and labor-saving measures are essential. We are currently working with internal members and contractors to consider the process. We create prototypes and test them from various angles, asking questions such as, "How much will costs increase if we add a function?" and "How much can we shorten the delivery time if we eliminate this process?" However, sometimes we don't get good results. However, failures provide important hints for the next step. It is through this repetition that we feel we are growing.
The reason why I chose the company
and what it's like to work here
In my previous job, I was in charge of production technology for automotive parts, but a company merger changed the internal environment, so I started looking for a new job. When I heard about the company's mass production plan of 600,000 units per year during my interview for joining the company, I thought I could put my experience to good use. This is because in my previous job, I was involved in the production technology for products that were produced in the hundreds of thousands per line per year. When I joined the company, I noticed that there were many processes that required manual, artisanal work. To put it in a positive way, it was careful, but if you look at it from another perspective, it was inefficient. If we advance automation, there would be no need to install unnecessary equipment or have surplus personnel. I thought that I could make a major update to the production site environment.
The good points of the company
Before joining the company, I was a little worried about whether I would be able to blend in with the other team members. I thought that if an outsider with a fair amount of experience in production technology joined the company, everyone would not know how to interact with them. But those fears were unfounded. From the very beginning, I was bombarded with questions like, "What did you do at your previous job?" I felt like I was a teacher (laughs). Everyone accepted me immediately after I changed jobs, so I was able to learn the job smoothly. During my interview, the interviewer's words, "You'll be able to contribute right away," were not a lie. This is a workplace where previous jobs, gender, and age don't matter at all. That's why you can relax and demonstrate your maximum abilities.
