My job description
As a project manager (PM) for foundry products, I am responsible for all management tasks at every stage from trial and pre-production to  mass-production and even after conversation to mass-production of MEMS devices. Our customers include overseas startup companies. The devices are used in a variety of fields, including automotive, medical, industrial, and consumer electronics. We primarily meet with customers via web conferences, and report on progress toward our goals on a weekly basis. Another important part of my job is managing business plan sales progress. I work in collaboration with the QA, engineers, manufacturing, and production management teams. All members are so high-skilled, knowledgeable and professional that I am comfortable to collaborate with them to get  things move forward together.
Job satisfaction
The MEMS devices we work on are used in our customers' products, and I often see information about them in pre-releases or new articles, which makes me happy that my work has been useful. It's also a great source of pride to be involved in products and cutting-edge technologies that dramatically change people's lives. When we hear about promissing product sales are increasing, all the team members share in the joy. With members of various ages, genders, and nationalities, it's not easy to bring everyone together as a PM, but that's exactly why all the hard works pay off when we see results.
Difficulty of the job
Silicon Sensing, where I work, is a joint venture between Sumitomo Precision and Collins Aerospace in the UK, so in some ways the way we work can feel a little complicated. Japan and the UK differ not only in terms of language and culture, but also in business practices and laws, so as a PM, I have to figure out how to reconcile these differences. If I don't take a firm lead and take control, there are chances that the project will be delayed. However, we haven't faced any major problems so far. This is because the One Company policy is thoroughly implemented throughout the company. With a cooperative structure and spirit in place, I can go about my daily work with a great sense of security.
The reason why I chose the company
and what it's like to work here
There was an organizational change at my previous company, which made me want to look at other job opportunities, so I started looking for a new job. I was interested in this company not only because I could utilize my experience from my previous job, but also because I was attracted to the portofolio of the company running multiple businesses. My previous company also operates a semiconductor business, but as you would expect, a company with only one business is susceptible to economic fluctuations. In that respect, I thought I would feel more secure working at a company that operates multiple businesses. After joining the company, I realized there are more people actively playing who have changed jobs than I expected. The company has an educational system in place that people can work without any problems even if they join mid-career, and the company has a warm and welcoming culture.
The good points of the company
There are many kind people who are considerate of others. For example, when I ask a question about something I don't understand, members and my superiors will explain it to me in an extremely detailed manner (laughs). There supposed to be a lot of companies and organizations implying if you are experienced, no need to explain everything. However, even with job experience, the way of working and culture are different, so there are many thingswhich are not clear and I feel very anxious. It's reassuring to have someone kindly speak to me at times like that. This is the company where many people who have changed jobs are active, and I think this is because the warm human relationships are present.
