My job description
I am in charge of production planning aircraft landing gear systems. We review the order details received from customers and consider how to proceed with manufacturing. I create schedules, build production systems, procure materials, control costs, and direct the work site to ensure that high-quality products are delivered without delay. Aircraft legs have a large number of parts, and special techniques are used in their production. In addition, the number of processes is large, so lead times are long. In addition, some customers order the leg system itself, while others request only some of the parts, so the delivery format changes from time to time. It is quite complicated to manage, but it is an exhilarating feeling when we are able to put it all together and produce a product exactly the way we want it to be. I feel that this job is a perfect fit for my personality, which is "I like to be in charge.
Job satisfaction
Aircrafts, which support the transportation of many people, are important products that are close to our lives. Without the landing gear that we make, an aircraft would not be able to move. It's rewarding to develop such an essential product. Since I started this job, whenever I see a plane flying on TV, I immediately check to see if I was involved in this aircraft. And when I realize it's my product, I scrutinize it, wondering if the landing gear is on screen. I've always wanted to take on the challenge of aircraft development, so I find it fascinating to learn about the structure of landing gear and the functions of each individual component through my work. When I understand the manufacturing process and realize, "I see!", I feel the joy of having acquired yet another skill and the joy of having learned about the inside of an aircraft.
Difficulty of the job
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of our work is the fact that we manufacture products while meeting strict quality requirements. In my previous job, I worked in production planning at a manufacturer, so I thought I had a strong sense of quality. However, because aircraft are something that people's lives are entrusted to, the level of quality they pursue is surprising. The quality requirements written on the blueprints are high, and the standards for how far we can deviate from those are strict. Also, when it's difficult to make a decision, rather than making the decision ourselves, we contact the customer's technical department and discuss whether the quality is satisfactory. Sometimes we check each and every part, and continue to communicate until we reach a quality that both parties can agree is satisfactory. I feel that the rigors of working in a job related to aviation safety are both my mission and my pride.
The reason why I chose the company
and what it's like to work here
Ever since I was a student, I'd dreamed of taking on the challenge of aircraft development. When I found this company while job-hunting, I felt like my dream might come true, so I applied. The "Sumitomo" name and the word "aircraft" sounded a bit off, so I was nervous about the interview. Perhaps my nervousness was conveyed during my first interview, as a strict company. From the second interview onwards, I was interviewing with more senior people, so I thought things would get more formal, but the more interviews I had, the more relaxed the atmosphere became. My impression of the company completely changed. And when I actually joined the company, everyone was so friendly that I almost felt like I'd been a little too tense. Of course, when it came to work, everyone was dead serious. Their commitment to quality is unwavering.
The good points of the company
There are a lot of friendly people here. Many of our employees are mid-career recruits, so you won't feel out of place if you're changing jobs. They understand the initial hurdles you might encounter and provide support. They even held a welcome party for us after we joined the company. I thought we'd all meet at the bar, but we all walked from the office to the bar. It felt like we were a bunch of close students. What surprised me the most was that we went bowling as the second stop after our drinking party. When my senior suggested, "Shall we go bowling next?" I was surprised, but I went along and it was a blast. I think there are a lot of unique and friendly people here.
