My job description
We manufacture hydraulic pumps and coolant pumps used in industrial machinery such as injection molding machines. I am responsible for machining the gear housings that house the pump's essential gears. As the name Precision Industries suggests, the level of machining required is on the micron level. I was surprised at first, but this commitment supports performance and quality, so I don't compromise. I operate lathes and machining centers to achieve the desired quality. The finished products are inspected for quality down to the smallest detail before being sent out into the world. Metalworking is not simply about operating the machines; it requires adjustments to suit various conditions, such as the properties of the metal, the characteristics of the cutting tools, and operating time. It is a complex skill that also utilizes the intuition born from accumulated knowledge and experience.
Job satisfaction
It's a complex technology, so it's quite difficult, but it also gives me a sense of personal growth. Things I couldn't do when I first joined the company can now be done with ease. I pump my fist in my head, thinking, "I can do this!" I particularly felt my own growth when I succeeded in shortening the time required for a highly difficult machining process. My seniors had previously tried to shorten the machining time by modifying the machining center's program, but there was a product for which they hadn't seen any results. I tried an approach from a different angle than my seniors, and was able to reduce the machining time from five minutes to one minute. Of course, the quality remained the same. I felt a little proud when my seniors told me, "You're doing great!"
Difficulty of the job
It's been seven years since I started this job, but I'm keenly aware that I still have a lot to learn. When I struggle with a process, my senior colleagues can quickly complete it. I'm stunned, thinking, "How can they do that?" Compared to my senior colleagues, who can detect even the slightest change in the machine's sound or behavior and change the way they do things, even after seven years, I still feel like I'm only half a pro. I need to gain experience that surpasses my knowledge and acquire the sensibilities of a technician. When I'm being helped by my senior colleagues, I focus on their hand and body movements, how they operate, and how attentive they are, trying to let the technology sink into my body. It's precisely because I have a long way to go before I become a fully-fledged technician that I'm so motivated to tackle my work.
The reason why I chose the company
and what it's like to work here
It all started when a senior from high school worked for our company. My mother heard from his mother that Precision was a good company, which piqued my interest, and so I decided to take a factory tour. What struck me on the factory tour was the kindness of the employees who led the tour. They gave us a fun and easy-to-understand tour so that we high school students wouldn't feel intimidated. I decided, "The Sumitomo Group is sure to be a stable company, and the people who work there are nice, so I'll work here." After joining the company, I realized that there are a lot of nice people. Of course, there are a lot of machines and dangers at the processing site, so there are times when we are told to be strict about safety, but during our off-time and at social events hosted by the labor union, the employees are very kind and welcoming, so I feel very comfortable there.
The good points of the company
When I got the job, I told my friends I was going to work for a Sumitomo Group company, and they said, "That sounds like a stable company! Amazing!" Indeed, I feel the stability and security of the Sumitomo Group every day. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of my friends lost work, but our company never lost any. We also have a system in place to ensure that even if a colleague takes paid leave, it doesn't cause any inconvenience to the workplace, so I can take time off without worrying about anything. The most amazing thing about this company is the newlywed housing program. Employees who get married and meet certain conditions can receive special rent subsidies. Thanks to this, we were able to move into a larger home soon after we got married, and my wife is very happy. I don't think there are many companies that give you and your family peace of mind. Experience the peace of mind and Precision technology of the Sumitomo Group.
