MEMS Infinity Drives Environmental Responsibility in MEMS Fabrication, Launching Foundry Services for Lead-Free Piezoelectric Thin Films provided by Sumitomo Chemical.--Prominent foundry offers lead-free KNN piezo thin films to device manufacturers

AMAGASAKI, HYOGO, Japan — December 15, 2025 — MEMS Infinity, the commercial microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) foundry division of Sumitomo Precision Products Co., Ltd. (Sumitomo Precision Products), today announced the availability of potassium sodium niobate (KNN), supplied by Sumitomo Chemical Company, Limited(Sumitomo Chemical), headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, a lead-free option for piezoelectric thin films. This industry-changing move opens high-performance, environmentally responsible piezoelectric material to a global audience of device manufacturers now facing tightening environmental regulations and corporate sustainability requirements.

Piezoelectric materials transduce electrical energy to mechanical energy and vice versa, making them attractive for applications requiring precise performance in a robust, ultraminiaturized form factor. Yet stricter environmental regulations — including Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) in Europe — as well as the broader rise of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-driven product strategies, are spearheading the effort to eliminate lead (Pb) throughout the semiconductor supply chain. This shift is particularly prominent in medical, bio-related, and wearable electronics, in which lead-free materials are increasingly mandatory for device adoption.

“KNN offers strong piezoelectric response without the use of lead. Until recently, however, difficulty in thin-film formation and subsequent processing of KNN has slowed its path toward practical commercialization,” said Mr. Tsuyoshi Takemoto, General Manager, MEMS Infinity. “The addition of KNN thin-film processing to MEMS Infinity’s broad portfolio of piezoelectric materials changes this dynamic, giving our customers greater flexibility in device design and material selection. In this way, we can accelerate the technical advantages of leadfree piezoelectric materials in those vital applications for which lead is prohibited by regulation.”

Technical Attributes of KNN Thin Films with MEMS Infinity Processing, a division of Sumitomo Precision Products
MEMS Infinity’s new foundry service combines the advantages of KNN thin films provided by Sumitomo Chemical. with MEMS Infinity’s field-proven expertise in piezoelectric MEMS for 150mm and 200mm wafer processing. Leveraging decades of experience in volume production of piezoelectric gyroscopes and other piezoelectric MEMS devices, MEMS Infinity provides a full suite of foundry services for KNN-based actuators, sensors, and other piezoelectric MEMS devices that were previously difficult to fabricate.
MEMS Infinity also offers comprehensive services for the development and design of KNNbased MEMS and photonics devices through its USA-based alliance partner, AMFitzgerald — further speeding the path to commercialization for its customers.
